Tebboune wins Algeria presidential polls

ALGIERS, Dec 13 (KUNA) -- Aabdelmadjid Tebboune has been elected president of Algeria with 58.15 percent of the votes in the presidential election held Thursday, the election watchdog said.
"The candidate Tabboune has won the majority of votes and, thence, no run-off will be held," Head of the National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE) Mohamed Charfi told a news conference.
Tabboune garnered 4.9 million votes, followed by Al-Bina Party candidate Abdelkader Bengrina with 1.4 million votes and Talaeif Al-Hourriyet Party candidate Ali Benflis with 896,934 votes, he said.
He added that the final polling turnout was 40 percent.
The vote came after a street protest movement in April ousted president Abdelaziz Bouteflika, following two decades in office. (end) mr.mt
