Conservatives win majority in UK elections

LONDON, Dec 13 (KUNA) -- British Conservative Party led by Prime Minister Boris Johnson won an overall majority in Parliamentary elections, passing the threshold of 326 seats needed for an overall majority of 47 seats.
Results published by the British Electoral Commission indicated that the Conservatives won so far 363 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons.
Johnson said it would give him "a powerful new mandate to get Brexit done" and take the UK out of the European Union next month.
The Labor Party won 203 seats, thus losing 59 seats compared to the 2017 elections, while the Scottish National Party won 13 additional seats, increasing its share to 48 seats.
Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn considered the election results "disappointing", announcing his intention to step down in the near future.
On their part, the Liberal Democrats have 11 seats, while the Scottish National Party posted big gains in Scotland, with 48 seats, while its leader Jo Swinson lost her seat to the Scottish National Party. Unionist Democrats in Northern Ireland lost two of the ten seats they won two years ago. The rest of the seats were divided into two independent candidates.
This election is the largest victory for the Conservatives since 1987, when the late Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was re-elected for a third term. (end) mrn.nhq
