US Senate agrees resolution recognizing Armenian genocide

WASHINGTON, Dec 12 (KUNA) -- Amid objections from President Donald Trump's administration and Turkey, the US Senate unanimously passed on Thursday a controversial resolution recognizing the Armenian genocide.
The resolution refers to historical events that allegedly took place between 1915 and 1923 during the WWI and the era of the Ottoman Empire.
Hailing it as historic, Bob Menendez, a Democratic Senator from New Jersey, said, "Our resolution to recognize and commemorate the Armenian Genocide just passed the United States Senate." "It is fitting and appropriate that the Senate stands on the right side of history in doing so. It commemorates the truth of the Armenian genocide," he added.
The draft resolution which is expected to complicate the already tense US-Turkish relations, was passed by the US House in October. (end) asj.gb
