NEW YORK, Dec 11 (KUNA) -- The death toll of the shooting that took place in New Jersey earlier on Tuesday has risen to six people, including three civilians, two suspects and a policeman, NBC reported.
The Tuesday afternoon shootout began when a detective saw a U-Haul truck possibly linked to the murder of a livery driver over the weekend in Bayonne. As the officer approached, a suspect got out of the van to shoot the officer before taking off, it said.
That officer, later identified as Det. Joseph Seals, died from his injuries. The preliminary investigation suggests the 39-year-old father of five was killed "while trying to interdict the bad guys" at a cemetery on Garfield Avenue, Jersey City Police Chief Michael Kelly was quoted by the news network as saying.
In a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff, local authorities Tuesday ordered lockdown of 12 nearby schools. (end) asf.mt
