Iraqi parl't approves new election law

BAGHDAD, Dec 5 (KUNA) -- The Iraqi parliament on Thursday passed new election commission law paving the way for ending political parties control of the body overseeing elections in the country.
After the voting, Speaker of Parliament Mohammed al-Halbusi told reporters that the new law dissolves the current election commission and defines new standards for the formation of a new one.
It stipulates that a new election commission would be formed and run by Iraqi judges who would be selected through a draw.
The law seeks to establish an independent and credible body to oversee future elections in the country amid escalating anti-government protests in Baghdad and southern provinces. (end) ahh.ibi
