ICAO withdraws license for Israel's new airport

AMMAN, Dec 4 (KUNA) -- The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), acting on Jordanian compliant, decided to withdraw the license for the airport Israel plans to construct in Timna valley to serve Israel's southern city of Eilat.
ICAO continues investigations into the impacts of the new airport on aviation safety in Jordan, Chairman of the Jordanian Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission (CARC) Haitham Mesto said on Wednesday.
During the twelfth ICAO Air Services Negotiation Event, being hosted by CARC in Aqaba, Jordan, on December 2-6, the Jordanian commission reaffirmed opposition to the construction of the new Israeli airport due to safety considerations, he pointed out.
The Jordanian official added the current location of the Timna airport is too close to the King Hussein International Airport in Jordan, thus running counter to the Chicago convention of 1944, he added.
In 2011, the Israeli government approved the construction of the new airport, located about 30 kilometers to the north of Eilat - Israel's window onto the Red Sea, to replace the small airport currently serving the city. (end) ab.gb
