BEIJING, Nov 28 (KUNA) -- Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng on Thursday summoned U.S. Ambassador to China Terry Branstad in protest against Washington's recent law that backs Hong Kong protesters, according to China's Xinhua news agency.
"China strongly urges the U.S. to correct its mistake and make a fresh start, not to put the Act into effect, and immediately stop meddling in Hong Kong affairs or interfering in China's other internal affairs so as to avoid making further damage to bilateral ties and cooperation in important areas between China and the United States," Le demanded.
He warned that his country would take countermeasures in response and the U.S. must bear all the consequences that may ensue, the news agency said.
Anti-government demonstrators have protested in the streets of Hong Kong for six months amid increasing violence and fears that China will ratchet up its response to stop the civil disobedience.
The U.S. House of Representatives sent two Hong Kong-related bills to the White House on Wednesday after voting almost unanimously in favor of them. The Senate had unanimously passed the day before. (end)
