BEIRUT, Nov 22 (KUNA) -- Demonstrators in Lebanon continued their protests on Friday by marking the 76th anniversary of Independence Day.
They organized a civil parade in central Beirut, attracting thousands of people from various areas in the country.
The organizers said in a statement that the symbolic parade is a civilized effort purposed to draw people from all walks of life under the banner of science and nation.
Retired army officers, children, musicians, artists, engineers, doctors, lawyers, craftsmen and students, among others, participated in the initiative, hoisting the "Flame of Independence" and national flags.
The "Flame of Independence" arrived at Martyrs' Square in Downtown Beirut, after it had set out in the morning from the area of Mohammerah in the district of Akkar in the North, passing through Tripoli, Batroun, Jbeil and Zouk, Lebanon's state-owned news agency reported.
Hundreds of citizens who thronged the Square greeted the "Independence Flame" with cheers, applause and waving national flags, as the Lebanese anthem played in the background.
Lebanese people have been staging peaceful protests and rallies for several weeks in the capital and main cities, calling for improving living conditions and creating a new technocrat government. (end) ayb.mt
