EU calls for int'l cooperation to fight sports corruption

BRUSSELS, Nov 21 (KUNA) -- The European Union Thursday called for cooperation and synergies with and between the EU Member States as well as with other international organisations and networks to strengthen the fight against corruption in sports.
"The fight against corruption in sport has taken many forms by different actors and some good results have been achieved over the years," said EU culture and sports ministers in a statement after their meeting in Brussels this evening.
The International Partnership Against Corruption in Sport (IPACS) is a potential example of such informal future cooperation, it noted.
The statement said that an increasing number of cases have come to light in the last 20 years due to significant changes in the sport industry, mainly related to the increasing commercialisation and the media coverage of sport, which result in an increase in revenue and financial flows.
Corruption in sport takes many forms, such as bribery, trading in influence, abuse of functions, manipulation of sport competitions and money laundering.
"It is the shared responsibility and in the interest of all stakeholders in the field of sport to fight against corruption in sport, including national, European and international sport organisations," it stated. (end) nk.bs
