Trump vows "big sanctions" against Turkey coming

WASHINGTON, Oct 14 (KUNA) -- US President Donald Trump vowed Monday that "big sanctions" on Turkey are coming amid the country's military operation in northern Syria.
Trump tweeted "Big sanctions on Turkey coming!" He added "do people really think we should go to war with NATO Member Turkey? Never ending wars will end!" Meanwhile, Secretary of Treasury Steve Mnuchin told reporters "this is an evolving situation. We are monitoring the situation carefully." He reiterated, "the sanctions are ready to go. We will be updating the president this morning and when he makes the decision we will act." On Friday, the Department of Treasury announced that Trump intends to sign an Executive Order "to dissuade Turkey from any further offensive military action in northeast Syria." Mnuchin had stressed that these are "very powerful sanctions, we can shut down the Turkish economy if we need to." For his part, Senator Lindsey Graham tweeted this morning "I will be working across party lines in a bicameral fashion to draft sanctions and move quickly, appreciating President Trump's willingness to work with the Congress. The Speaker indicated to me that time was of the essence." (end) si.mb
