Youth, activists urge world leaders to protect earth

NEW YORK, Sept 21 (KUNA) -- Students and youth activists called Saturday on world leaders, who would meet at high level climate change talks at UN next week, to swiftly stop carbon emissions or they would cease support for their leaders.
Political leaders should make drastic changes to transform the world towards clean energy, as well as protecting of oceans and promote sustainable consumption, UN envoy for the youth Jayathma Wickramanayake told the first youth summit on climate.
The summit was held in New York after millions of youth took to streets in different parts of the world to protest insufficient protection to planet earth.
"Climate change is a decisive issue for millions of youth in many parts of the world ... if we fail to act the impact will be severe," added Wickramanayake.
Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old Swedish environmental activist, said protests worldwide reflected unity of youth who called for genuine climate protection.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said the youth have contributed to shedding further light on the climate change ahead of the world's climate summit, due next Monday. (end) asf.bs
