UAE begins taxing e-cigarettes, sugary drinks -- Federal Tax Authority

ABU DHABI, Aug 24 (KUNA) -- The UAE Federal Tax Authority has started the policy-making procedures of the UAE Cabinet decision on imposing taxes on pre-cautionary goods and tax rates to calculate the selective price issued during in August and comes to force early January, said a statement on Saturday.
UAE Federal Tax Authority statement added the selective tax will be expanded to include electronic smoking devices, liquids, sweetened beverages, tobacco and its products, energy drinks and soft drinks, on which the selective tax was introduced in October 2017.
The new decision comes as part of the government's continuous efforts to promote healthy lifestyle for UAE society to reduce diseases related to the consumption of harmful products to human health within the framework of the UAE Vision 2021, noted statement.
The statement called on all producers, importers and stores of sugar-sweetened beverages to apply for registration with the Authority and to abide by the decision aimed at achieving the public interest, pointing out that selective taxation is an indirect tax imposed on certain harmful goods to reduce their consumption.
