Trump postpones visit to Denmark over Greenland purchase

WASHINGTON, Aug 21 (KUNA) -- US President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he is "postponing" his trip to Denmark, scheduled next month.
This comes after Trump voiced interest in purchasing Greenland, a Danish territory, which Denmark's Prime Minister said that buying the island was "absurd" and that it was not up for sale.
Trump said in a tweet "Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time." "The Prime Minister was able to save a great deal of expense and effort for both the United States and Denmark by being so direct. I thank her for that and look forward to rescheduling sometime in the future!" he remarked.
On Sunday, Trump told reporters on Greenlands's purchase, "we're very good allies with Denmark. We protect Denmark like we protect large portions of the world. So the concept came up and I said, "Certainly, I'd be. Strategically, it's interesting, and we'd be interested." But we'll talk to them a little bit," stressing "strategically, for the United States, it would be nice." Trump was scheduled to visit Poland and Denmark from August 31 to September 3.(end) si.tg
