Arab customs union to materialize soon - official

CAIRO, Aug 19 (KUNA) -- A uniform Arab customs union is hoped to be put in place at an early date, said the Arab League on Monday.
"The requirements of the Arab Customs Union, mainly an agreement on single tariffs, are to be completed soon," a senior league official said in a statement on the sidelines of a meeting of the bloc's customs committee.
During the three-day meeting, the participants will tackle a set of issues and subjects, primarily an Arab customs information center and customs information exchange among Arab countries, the bloc's economic integration body chief Bahjat Abu Al-Nasr said.
The agenda of the gathering also encompasses a key item on the "authorized economic operator", in addition to a poll on qualified customs outlets in member states, he added.
In this context, the Arab League has worked out a working paper on the economic operator and relevant requirements with a view to creating a specific vision, the official noted.
The committee is expected to report its recommendations and remarks to the Arab League's Economic and Social Council for further deliberations and discussions during its upcoming meeting in September, Al-Nasr added. (end) mfm.rg.mt
