Pompeo to participate in UNSC debate on Mideast peace, security

WASHINGTON, Aug 19 (KUNA) -- US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will travel to New York on Tuesday to participate in a UN Security Council (UNSC) debate on peace and security in the Middle East, the State Department announced Sunday.
State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said in a statement that Pompeo would participate in a UN Security Council debate hosted by the Polish Mission to the UN, "On challenges to peace and security in the Middle East and the Administration's support for multilateral solutions." It added that Pompeo would also meet with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on the margins of the event.
For his part, Pompeo tweeted "I look forward to visiting New York for the UN Security Council debate on peace and security in the Middle East. I will be discussing ways the US and UN can work together to forge solutions and combat global challenges with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres." Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump told reporters earlier that he will "probably wait" until after the Israeli elections, due in September, to put out the Middle East Peace plan.
"I probably will wait, but we may put out pieces of it," he said. "But that's probably the toughest deal of all, peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians." (end) si.gta
