Heatwave hits US, affects over 100 mln people

WASHINGTON, July 21 (KUNA) -- An excessive heat warning has been put in effect for the nation's capital due to a heatwave hitting several states across the US affecting over 100 million people.
According to the National Weather Service, the temperatures are forecast around 38 degrees Celsius.
"Dangerously high temperatures and humidity could quickly cause heat stress or heat stroke if precautions are not taken," it warned on Sunday.
"147 million people in the Central and Eastern US are currently under a Heat Advisory or Excessive Heat Warning," added the forecast agency.
"Very warm overnight temperatures limit recovery from daytime heat. Check on anyone vulnerable to heat, such as the elderly or sick," it noted.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of the District of Columbia (DC) Muriel Bowser had activated the District's "Heat Emergency Plan and is extending service hours for low-barrier shelters and select Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR)-operated outdoor pools and splash parks through Sunday, July 21," it said.
Many outdoor events and activities have been canceled or postponed due to this heatwave. (end) si.ma
