Algeria win second African Nations Cup with 1-0 win over Senegal

KUWAIT, July 19 (KUNA) -- Algeria won football's Africa Cup of Nations for the second time on Friday after Baghdad Bounedjah's early goal gave his side a 1-0 victory over Senegal in Cairo.
The striker, who plys his trade for Qatari side Al-Sadd, scored after a slide tackle committed by Salif Sane sent the shot curling into the top left corner to the bewilderment of the keeper.
After the goal, Senegal ramped up the pressure across both halves seeking to equalise.
They wasted numerous chances and had a penalty shout legitimately ruled out by VAR in the second half, after a Senegal cross struck an Algerian defender's arms, which were kept close to his body.
This remained the theme throughout the match as the North Africans soaked up the countless offensives launched by their opponents.
Algeria clinch their second title for the first time in 29 years, while Senegal, who were one of the favourites ahead of the competition, have once again failed to deliver a single African cup in their history.
Earlier, three-time winners Nigeria claimed third after beating Tunisia in their fixture on Wednesday. (end) sd
