Algerian parliament speaker resigns

ALGIERS, July 2 (KUNA) -- Speaker of the Algerian People's National Assembly Mouad Bouchareb submitted his resignation on Tuesday under pressure from the majority of the council's members.
Algerian media said Bouchareb resigned from his post earlier in October, but the council, in turn, studied the decision and referred it to the legal committee.
Bouchareb met senior state officials on Monday to declare his immediate resignation before the conclusion of the parliamentary session scheduled Tuesday morning.
Bouchareb came under pressure from Head of National Liberation Front (FLN) Mohamed Djemai and its deputies, who had announced boycotting parliament until he resigned.
Six parliamentary groups signed a petition on Sunday demanding Bouchareb to resign immediately to preserve the stability of the country's legislature and the nation. (end) mr.lr
