There can only be political solution to Yemen conflict - UNSC

NEW YORK, June 18 (KUNA) -- Members of the UN Security Council on Tuesday reiterated that there can only be a political solution to the conflict in Yemen, expressing full support for the Special Envoy of the Secretary General in this regard.
This came during their meeting on the situation in Yemen; and heard briefings from Special Envoy Martin Griffiths, Undersecretary General Mark Lowcock, WFP Executive Director David Beasely and Lieutenant General Michael Lollesgard.
In a statement following the meeting, Security Council President, Permeant Representative of Kuwait to the UN Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaibi, said that the Council called on all parties to engage with the UN-led process to make progress towards a comprehensive political settlement in accordance with Security Council resolutions, in particular resolution 2216, the Gulf Cooperation Council initiative and its implementation mechanisms, as well as outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference.
Members also condemned in the strongest terms the attack by the Houthis on Abha International Airport in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on June 12, injuring 26 including women and children, he said.
They also reaffirmed that this attack and the threat of further attacks against the Kingdom and the wider region constitute a violation of international law and threat to international peace and security and remind all parties of their obligations under International Humanitarian Law.
They stressed the need to hold perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts accountable, he added.
They also condemned the misappropriation of humanitarian assistance and aid by the Houthis and reiterated their call for the rapid, safe and unhindered flow of commercial and humanitarian supplies and personnel into and across the country. (end) ss
