UK, Afghan leaders discuss int'l issues

LONDON, June 17 (KUNA) -- UK Prime Minister Theresa May and the President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani discussed on Monday a number of international issues relevant to both countries' interests in addition to strengthening bilateral relations.
In a press statement, the Spokesman for the British Prime Minister said May and Ghani met in the Prime Minister's Office and discussed the preparations of Afghanistan's upcoming presidential elections at the end of September and the importance of transparency and credibility.
May welcomed the efforts and planning by Ghani to achieve peace in all the Afghan cities and his talks with Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The Spokesman also added the US will continue to provide development assistance to Afghanistan, promising to offer humanitarian aid on the course of the next five years to help those urgently in need of food, water, and medicine.
On the same note, the British government announced it will be providing Afghanistan with British Pounds 170 million (USD 215 million) in humanitarian aid to cover the nutritional (food, water, and medicine) needs of the Afghan people.
After meeting with Ghani, the Minister of the Department for International Development (DFID), Rory Stewart said that Afghanistan is urgently in need of humanitarian aid following the severe drought that hit a number of Afghan cities. (end) khd.aq
