Sudan union of professionals accuses military council of hijacking power

KHARTOUM, June 17 (KUNA) -- Sudanese Union of Professionals said on Monday that statements and actions of the military council indicate its intention to hold on to power alone.
The leader of the union Mohammad Al-Asum said in a news conference the council had made their arrangement in anticipation of any scenario, stressing on the commitment to past agreements with the military council.
Al-Asum added that the Ethiopian mediator prepared a draft based on previous agreements, which will be presented to the Ethiopian Prime Minister before presenting them for signing by the Freedom and Change Declaration and the military council.
Al-Asum noted that the military council planned the method of execution to end the sit-in at the general command in Khartoum concurrently with the disassembling other sit-ins in front of the army command, and in 13 other cities, pointing to a public dismay from what he described was as "massacre." Al-Asum revealed that 12 cases of rape were documented in Khartoum's sit-in.
Sudan has been racking up unrest since last December, turning anger from rising bread prices and lack of liquidity into ongoing protests that culminated in armed forces' intervention to topple President Omar Al-Bashir. (end) mam.mb
