Italy eyes greater role in nominations for EU posts

ROME, May 24 (KUNA) -- Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte asserted the right of his country to assume a leading role in future nominations for top posts in the European Union institutions.
During his meeting with President of the European Council Donald Tusk at Palazzo Chigi here on Friday, Conte said, "Italy, as the third biggest country in the Eurozone, is entitled to a primary role in the nomination process." The Prime Minister noted that Italy is an EU founding member and Europe's second biggest manufacturer, according to a statement by his office.
He affirmed Italy's determination to assume its responsibilities for meeting the aspirations of the European citizens for a stronger, more secure and more united Europe.
Tusk is in Rome for consultations with Conte ahead of the informal EU summit, due in Brussels on Tuesday, May 28, where the nomination process will start, in the run-up to the European Council meeting on June 20-12. (end) mn.rg.gb
