KUWAIT, May 18 (KUNA) -- Kuwaiti relief aid bodies this week handed out tens of thousands of meals and provided urgent medical care for disadvantaged families in conflict and disaster-ridden countries across Asia and Africa during the holy month of Ramadan.
Earlier, Kuwait Relief Society handed out 90 days' worth of food to 36,000 refugees at Hamam camp, while the Kuwait-based International Islamic Charity Organization (IICO) gave food packages to 17,000 refugees in two eastern Irbil camps.
The IICO initiative, which has benefited over 3,500 families, is aimed at providing them with copious amounts of food amid a harsh summer during the fasting month of Ramadan, Kuwait's Irbil Consul General Omar Al-Kanderi said.
As for the consulate itself, it has been undertaking a 10-day Ramadan break-fast initiative targeting 6,000 Iraqis.
Thousands of tonnes of food are being handed out to lower income people in the Kurdish city.
The Kuwaiti government also continues its 10,000 loaf of bread a day programme in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.
Elsewhere, since the start of Ramadan, Kuwait Red Crescent has been involved in a 30-day break-fast meals programme, targeting some 15,000 Syrian refugees across several cities in Jordan.
Meanwhile, Syrian refugees in Turkey received hospital attention, namely 50 checkups and 27 surgeries, at the hands of a joint team of Kuwaiti and Qatari doctors in south Turkey's Hatay provincial town of Reyhanli.
The initiative included ear, nose and throat and digestive endoscopy surgeries, one of the doctors, Ibrahim Al-Tawaleh, told KUNA.
This was the fifth trip made by the 21-member team of doctors to Syrian refugee camps.
Kuwait Food and Relief Bank signed a cooperation agreement with the UAE Food Bank for cooperation on food preservation from waste and delivering it to people in need in Kuwait and overseas.
The initiative, signed during talks between the organisations in Kuwait earlier in the week, aims to promote the principles of community responsibility and hunger eradication around the world, it said.
Furthermore, a delegation of Kuwait Red Crescent (KRC) Society last Monday distributed food packs among deserving people in federal capital Islamabad in collaboration with Pakistan Red Crescent (PRC).
KRC concluded the distribution in Lahore, Kasur, Jhang, Layyah, Muzaffargarh, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Peshawar, Bannu, Kohistan, Mohmand, Bajaur, Kurram, South Waziristan, North Waziristan, Quetta, Pishin, Panjgur, Chaghi, Karachi, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Haveli, Abbaspur, Bhimber and Kotli cities of Pakistan in the holy month of Ramadan.
The KRC distributed 1,050 packs in eastern Punjab province, 450 packs in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, 1,330 packs in northern tribal region bordering Afghanistan, 1,050 packs in southwestern Balochistan province, 650 in southern Sindh province, 800 in Pakistan administered Kashmir and 200 food packs were distributed to unprivileged people in Islamabad.
The delegation head of KRC, Yousef Al Merag on the occasion expressed his immense pleasure and satisfaction over the distribution process.
In a statement to KUNA, he thanked Pakistan Red Crescent Society, the government and the people of Pakistan for their support to reach out the deserving people. He said that the cooperation in the humanitarian activities highlights the brotherly relations between Pakistan and the State of Kuwait.
He told that distribution process of over 5,500 food packs (61 kilograms each) to needy families has been ensured. The humanitarian activities are taking place under the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who is the UN Humanitarian Leader, he added.
The General Secretary of Pakistan Red Crescent Society, Khalid Bin Majeed thanked the State of Kuwait and KRC for organizing food distribution in the holy month of Ramadan with the generous support.
He told KUNA that with support of KRC and other partners, they have been able to reach out 60,000 people through distribution of food packs and Iftars across Pakistan. He expressed hope that this support will form a lasting partnership to support the destitute people of Pakistan.
He was optimistic to have more joint ventures between the brotherly countries. The KRC delegation monitored activities in Rawalpindi city and held meetings with PRC for improving ties in the humanitarian sector during the visit.
The KRC delegation also included Waleed Al-Rashid, Naser Al-Mutairi, Abdul Al-Hameed Ali and Yousif Al-Duaij In Jordan, Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) announced that it distributed nearly 15,000 iftar meal on Syrian refugees in Jordan as well as Eid gifts on some 1,000 familes during the month of Ramadan.
Mishal Al-Oteibi, member of the KRCS team, told KUNA following an iftar ceremony that a program has been setup to distribute nearly 1,000 ifta meals during this month.
He added that KRCS has also allocated 1,000 coupons worth 50 Jordanian dinars each (KD 22) on Syrian families to help them prepare for the upcoming eid.
On his part, Director of Public Relations and Media in the Jordanian Red Crescent Mohammad Al-Turaifi said that the program of KRCS during Ramadan includes distribution of iftar meals on 6,000 refugees over six iftar ceremonies.
He added that some 9,000 iftar meals would also be distributed across the Kingdom.(end).
