Omani Sultan, US Secretary of State discuss regional issues

WASHINGTON, May 16 (KUNA) -- UN Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Oman's Sultan Qaboos bin Said have stressed, in a telephone conversation, their strong support to UN special envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths and the political process in that Arab country.
This came in a statement issued on Thursday by US State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus.
She said the two sides also agreed on the necessity of parties' commitment to obligations made in Sweden so as to show their seriousness and push ahead with the political process.
They also discussed the "Iranian threats to the Arabian Gulf region", she noted.
Pompeo thanked Sultan Qaboos for Oman's continued partnership and dialogue with the US on the most difficult issues in the region, she stated.
Last December, intra-Yemeni talks were held in Sweden over a week that resulted in an agreement amongst the Yemeni parties on several key issues, in a step seen by observers as a great breakthrough, which may pave the way for a comprehensive solution to the crisis, which lasted for five years.
