GENEVA, April 29 (KUNA) -- The Arab Gulf Programme for Development (AGFUND) announced the winners of the USD one million-worth Prince Talal International Prize for Human Development for 2018.
The award is themed "End of poverty in all its forms everywhere" - the first of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), while "Water and Sanitation" the sixth goal, was chosen as subject of the 2019 Prize.
Based on evaluations of a specialized team of experts, the Committee has approved four winning projects out of 166 from 78 countries vying for the prize, Nasser Al-Qahtani, the Executive Director of AGFUND, said during the 20th meeting of the Prize Committee on Monday.
The winner of the First Category Prize (USD 400,000), designated to projects of UN, international or regional organizations, is Reducing Poverty and Gender Inequality in Sarepul province, Afghanistan," he announced.
The project is implemented by Hand in Hand International in Afghanistan.
The Second Category Prize (USD 300,000) allocated for projects implemented by national NGOs was awarded to "Addressing Food Insecurity through Modern Farming Techniques," implemented by Dandora Dumpsite Rehabilitation Group (DADREG) in Kenya.
The Third Category Prize (USD 300,000) specified for projects implemented by national government agencies and public institutions and social enterprises is approved for "Youth Connekt (under Youth and Women's Employment Programme)," implemented by Ministry of Youth, Republic of Rwanda.
The Fourth Category Prize (USD 100,000) allocated for projects implemented by individuals was given to "New life," implemented in Egypt under the initiative and effort of Nawal Mostafa, he added.
Al-Qahtani noted that AGFUND's Board of Directors renamed its international prize for pioneering human development projects after late Prince Talal bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, the founder of AGFUND who passed away on December 22, 2018, in recognition of his great efforts and dedication to humanity and development.
