Saudi, UAE assist Sudan with USD 3 bln relief package

RIYADH, April 21 (KUNA) -- Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates on Sunday handed a USD 3 billion aid package to Sudan aimed at stabilising its currency and responding to the urgent needs of its people.
"The assistance comes amid the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the UAE's commitment to the people of Sudan and to productive cooperation and support for Sudan," the Saudi state news agency reported.
Some 500 million of the assistance will be deposited into Sudan's Central Bank in order to strengthen its financial position, ease the pressure on its currency and achieve greater stability on the pound's exchange rate.
The rest of the assistance will be used amid urgent response efforts for the people, namely through food, medicine and oil derivaties. (end) mdm.sd
