ALGIERS, April 19 (KUNA) -- Vice President of the Presidential Council of the Libyan Government of National Accord Ahmad Omar Maitig strongly denounced the offensive launched by forces loyal to (rtd) Maj.-Gen. Khalifa Haftar on the capital city of Tripoli since.
"The Government is resolutely facing up to this aggression out of commitment to protect the security and stability of the country and the safety of civilian life," he stressed.
Maitig made the comments at a press symposium here at the end of his visit to Algeria on Friday.
"The offensive started on April 4 while preparations were underway for convening the national reconciliation conference in Ghadames city, west Libya, under the UN auspices," Maitig regretted.
He affirmed that the forces of the legitimate government were able in the recent days to repel the attacks on Tripoli and put the attacking militias on the defensive.
On his visit to neighborly Algeria, Maitig said it signals that Algeria remained a key player in resolving the crisis in Libya through political means.
He urged the countries that support Haftar to reconsider their positions, affirming that the man lost his credibility as a reliable partner in the political process given "the war crimes his forces committed recently." (end)
