Today in Kuwait's history

KUWAIT, March 23 (KUNA) -- 1921 -- Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah took the helm of power as the 10th Ruler of Kuwait. He was famous of piety, modesty and fairness.
Oil was discovered during his era when Kuwait Oil Company inked the first concessions agreement on December 23, 1934. First crude oil shipment departed from Al-Ahmadi Refinery on July 30, 1946.
Moreover during his rule, education and health care noticeably developed, in addition to onest of the "democratic march" when the Shura Council was established, followed with the first and second Legislative Assemblies. He was designated, on April 1, 1937, as "His Highness the Great Amir." His rule lasted for 29 years. He died on January 29, 1950.
1953 -- Oil started running out of Al-Wafra Field Number 4 at a rate of 420.2 barrels per day. Al-Wafra region, in the northwest of the Kuwaiti-Saudi divided zone, was under concessions granted to the American Amen Oil Company.
1977 -- The Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah issued decree-into-law approving Kuwait's joining of the international agreement for international cargo transportation, the "Tir Convention," issued in Geneva on January 15, 1959.
1977 -- The Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah issued a decree-into-law establishing a Kuwaiti shareholding company named Kuwait Finance House at a capital of KD 10 million (approx. USD 35 million).
1980 -- Kuwait joined Rehabilitation International.
2002 -- In the first initiative at the Arab level, Kuwait dedicated March 23 as the annual day for releasing caged birds. It was internationally approved as the "Arab Day for Releasing Caged Birds." 2003 -- Libyan protestors attacked the Kuwaiti embassy building in Tripoli. Kuwait held the Libyan authorities fully responsible, demanded immediate investigation and an official apology.
2003 -- Kuwait inked an agreement for establishing the regional bureau for the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in the country.
2008 -- The Central Bank of Kuwait (CBK) conducted basic amendments to guidelines for consumption and installed loans, lowering the profit margin above the discount price, provided that the monthly tranche would not exceed 40 percent of the net civil servants' salaries, 30 percent for the retirees with a fixed interest, to be re-examined once every five years.
2009 -- The Kuwaiti soccer team star, Jassem Al-Huwaidi, bid football good-bye, having participated in up to 99 international matches.
2011 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah inaugurated Sheikh Mubarak Al-Kabeer kiosk and the Islamic pharmacy.
2014 -- Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) declared winning the award of the "Arab Organization for Environmental Initiatives." 2015 -- Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) inked in Nepal a loan agreement worth KD five million (USD 17 million) to fund an irrigation project.
2016 -- KFAED signed an accord with the Ivory Coast to lend the country KD five million (USD 17 million) for financing a college for vocational training. (end) rk
