BRUSSELS, March 22 (KUNA) -- The Socialists and Democrats (S&D) Political Group in the European Parliament Friday condemned what it described as "the latest appalling tweet by U.S. President Donald Trump promising the recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights."
S&D Group vice-president for foreign affairs, Elena Valenciano, in a press release said: "President Trump continues his irresponsible manipulations in the Middle East. After having moved the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, now he proposes to recognise Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights."
"With this, yet again, he breaks international consensus and goes against international law. The re-drawing of state borders through military occupation and annexation is over, and is unacceptable in the 21st century," she said.
"We are still waiting for Mr Trumpآ’s peace plan he announced a long time ago. But in the light of his decisions and announcements, which are destroying his credibility as an honest broker," said the EPآ’s second-largest political group.
The European Union and its member states must stick to the international consensus and to international law, and should start playing a genuine political role in peace efforts, added the statement. (end)
