Algerian Pres. says country heading for regime change

ALGIERS, March 18 (KUNA) -- Algerian President Abdulaziz Bouteflika said on Monday the country is about to change its system of government and define its political, economic and social approach at upcoming inclusive national conference.
In a message to the Algerian people marking Victory Day, President Boutaflika said "the task by the National conference is sensitive because it will make the decision for a qualitative leap demanded by the Algerian people, especially younger generations." Bouteflika added, "the people will be the ones who will decide on the constitutional amendment through a referendum, which will witness comprehensive and profound amendmens.
He said the conference, to include all segments of the Algerian people, would determine the date of a presidential election.
"Strengthening our country economically and socially will make it more and more powerful to maintain safety of its territories and security amidst global crises," Bouteflika said.
The Algerian leader added the security and stability of the country need to live up to economic, social and cultural aspirations of people, while they should reinforce their army to protect Algeria from external dangers.
On March 11, Bouteflika announced postponing presidential election, and his intention not to run for new term in response to people's calls and rallies, which began on February 22. (end) mr.mb
