DOHA, March 11 (KUNA) -- Mohammad Maryan, of Kuwait, came second in Qatar Cultural Village Foundation's (Katara) Al-Nahma song competition, trailing to Qatar's Ali Al-Haddad on Monday.
Iraq's Mohammad Abdulsamad came third and Oman's Fares Al-Alawi was awarded the judges' award.
Speaking to KUNA, Maryan said he was proud with this achievement and noted competition was fierce among 11 singers from Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Iraq.
Al-Nahma singers, he said, were singing on board the ships traveling to India and Africa, as well as for pearl diving during summer seasons.
Salma Al-Nuaimi, supervisor of Katara Al-Nahma song competition, thanked all singers who participated in the competition.
She said in a statement the competition has been witnessing growing successes where 60 singers took part in this year's event.
Al-Nahma is a maritime art and a significant patrimony in the whole region, as Al-Nahham (the traditional singer) accompanies sailors during their journeys to motivate and entertain mariners and pearl divers, establishing one of the most important cultural tributaries that contributed to the emergence of most of the forms of singing, music and folklore in the Gulf region.
