Al-Bashir reshuffle retains PM, defence minister amid angry protests

KHARTOUM, Feb 23 (KUNA) -- Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir's emergency cabinet reshuffle has kept his prime minister, defence, foreign, and justice ministers as angry nationwide protests calling for him to step down resume, entering their third month.
The changes also affected provincial governors, all of whom have been replaced with senior officers from the military and police.
On Friday night, the 75-year-old president announced a one-year state of emergency on local television.
Al-Bashir, who has been in office for 30 years, also said he would delay deliberating much-opposed constitutional changes that would allow him to run for an additional term.
Opposition protesters have vowed to continue marching until Al-Bashir steps down with an interim national civilian government taking charge in his place.
Authorities say that the protests have led to the death of 30 people and another 800 being detained, while the opposition contest these figures, saying the real number is closer to over 50 killed and more than 1,000 arrested. (end) mam.sd
