FIFA, Qatar discuss increase of teams to 48 at world cup - Infantino

ANKARA, Feb 15 (KUNA) -- FIFA President Gianni Infantino said Friday the World football governing body's Executive Football Summit discussed with Qatari officials the increase of teams in the 2022 World Cup in Doha from 32 to 48.
Infantino, at a news conference following the summit, held in istanbul, said he was optimistic but warned it would not be easy to hold a World Cup with 48 teams.
"I am optimistic but is it easy? No it is not easy, I have to be honest," he added.
He meanwhile said the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was applied in around 50 countries, including Turkey.
The VAR was implemented in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he said, and was used once every three matches.
Infantino said Turkey could host major football tournaments, including the World Cup.
FIFA Executive Football Summit, which brought 47 presidents of national federations, discussed the 2022 World Cup and VAR.
Infantino will be re-elected as FIFA boss for a second term in June. (end) rs.bs
