Sudanese policeman dies after alleged attack by protesters

KHARTOUM, Feb 15 (KUNA) -- Sudan announced on Friday that a policeman died from his injuries sustained during Thursday's demonstrations, while the opposition vowed to organize protests over the week.
The policeman was wounded after some protesters threw stones at a vehicle belonging to a police force that was passing near protests in the capital, police's spokesman Hashem Ali Abdul-Rahim told a news conference.
He revealed that a number of police personnel were wounded, including one severely, but he died later.
The force was not carrying any weapons or anti-rioting tools, he noted.
Some suspects were arrested and authorities are in search for the rest of the suspected, he made clear.
In the meantime, protests were renewed following Friday prayers in Khartoum and several areas, calling for ouster of President Omar Al-Bashir. However, security forces confronted them.
In a statement, the Sudanese Professional Association (SPA) and the opposition groups called for a new bout protests on Friday and continuing it over the week. They are planning to march towards the presidential palace to submit a memo urging al-Bashir to step down.
The Sudanese government accused some parties including the SPA, National Consensus Forces, Sudan Call and others of using violence to overthrow the government. The government vowed to pursue them legally and stop any violence.
Since December 19, Sudan has been witnessing organized protests demanding the regime to quit.
Sudanese authorities declared the killing of 30 people and the detention of more than 800 during the protests.
However, the opposition said more than 50 people were killed and over 10,000 were arrested. (end) mam.hm
