Kuwait lauds Arab efforts to lessen impacts of Syria's "humanitarian crisis"

CAIRO, Jan 23 (KUNA) -- The State of Kuwait on Wednesday lauded Arab efforts to lessen impacts of the ongoing "humanitarian crisis" suffered by the Syrian people.
Speaking to the Arab-European joint meeting at the Arab League headquarters here, Kuwait's Permanent Envoy to the League Ambassador Ahmad Al-Bakir specifically lauded countries neighboring Syria for their efforts in hosting huge numbers of Syrian refugees in an "over-burdened manner in terms of finance and security, in addition to pressure on services and infrastructure." Al-Bakir pointed out that those efforts deserve full support from the international community, especially from "our friends in the European Union," in order to carry on with aiding those refugees.
As for the role of Arab countries on the matter, Ambassador Al-Bakir said that Kuwait hosted the first three donor conferences for Syria (2013, 2014 and 2015), in addition to co-chairing the 2016 London conference, as well as Brussels 1 and 2 in 2017, 2018.
He voiced Kuwait's eagerness for an effective participation in the upcoming donors' conference in Brussels this year, pointing out that Kuwait's contributions to ease off the Syrian humanitarian crisis amounted to USD 1.6 billion.
"The only possible solution for the (Syrian) crisis is the political one, in accordance with the 2012 Geneva 1 communique and UNSC resolution 2254," he reaffirmed. (end) mfm.hb
