Two protesters killed in Sudan demonstrations

KHARTOUM, Jan 17 (KUNA) -- At least two people were shot dead and dozens of others injured in violent clashes between the Sudanese security forces and protesters on Thursday.
The two victims, including a child, were shot in the head in Burri Al Daraisa neighborhood in Khartoum, the Sudanese Doctors Committee (SDC) reported, noting that nine protesters sustained (mainly bullet) injuries.
The protesters were marching towards the Presidential Palace to lodge a note calling for President Omar Al-Bashir to step down.
But the security forces blocked their way and arrested hundreds of them, according to local media reports.
Meanwhile, spokesman of the Interior Ministry said the police forces used tear gas to disperse "illegal demonstrations" staged in several parts of the country.
"We have received reports of casualties among the crowds and one person succumbed to his wounds," Hashem Abdul-Rahim said.
The Sudanese authorities reported 24 deaths in the protests since December 13, being staged against the deteriorating living conditions while opposition sources put the figure at 40 in addition to hundreds of detainees. (end) mam.gb
