Jordan, Palestine stress need of breaking deadlock of peace process

AMMAN, Jan 12 (KUNA) -- Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Al-Safadi and Secretary General of the Executive Committee the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Saeb Erekat on Saturday affirmed the importance of the international community's move to break the stalemate of the peace process.
During a meeting held between the two sides, they also urged the international community to confront unilateral Israeli measures undermining the two-state solution, a statement by Jordan's Foreign Ministry said.
They called for creating conducive atmosphere for serious and effective negotiations to resolve the conflict based on the two-state solution, the statement added.
The basis of the two-state solution ensures the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in accordance with the lines of June 4 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital, and in line with the UN resolutions and the Arab peace initiative, as the only way for a comprehensive peace, it noted.
The two officials stressed the necessity for the international community to take effective and decisive stance against Israel's settlement policy, which constitutes a clear violation of the laws of the international legitimacy and undermines chances of achieving peace, according to the statement.
Jerusalem is a red line, they said, warning against repercussions of Israeli's attempts to change the Arab, Muslim and Christian identity of the holy city.
Such attempts will provoke feelings of both Muslims and Christians, it made clear.
It is necessary to continue supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to play its role, they emphasized.
The statement quoted Erekat as saying that he Palestinian leadership appreciated Jordan's support for Palestine's legitimacy.
He also commended Jordan's efforts led by King Abdullah II to back the Palestinian people and their right to freedom and the establishment of a state on their national soil, the statement concluded. (end) ab.hm
