Arab League raps Australia for recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital

CAIRO, Dec 15 (KUNA) -- The Arab League on Saturday vehemently deplored an Australian decision to recognize West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The Australian move is a serious breach of the international legal status of the city of Jerusalem, relevant international legitimacy resolutions, as well as a violation of Palestinian rights, Assistant Secretary-General for Palestine and Occupied Arab Territories Saad Abu Ali said in a statement.
"The decision is also a blatant bias towards the positions and policies of Israeli occupation, and even stimulates its continuing and aggravating practices and aggression," he said.
The Arab League's official cautioned that the irresponsible and partial decision, which affects the rights, sentiments and sanctities of Arab Muslims and Christians, would have serious consequences and escalate the already volatile situation.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced Saturday his country's recognition of West Jerusalem as Israel's capital, but a contentious embassy shift from Tel Aviv will not occur until a "peace settlement" is achieved. (end) mfm.mt
