EU: "Our negotiating partner on Brexit is Premier May"

BRUSSELS, Nov 15 (KUNA) -- The European Union Thursday declined to comment on developments in the UK following resignation of a number of ministers and stressed that the negotiating interlocutor on Brexit is Prime Minister Theresa May.
"We are not going to comment on any of the internal political developments in the UK. Our negotiating partner is Prime Minister May and the UK government and we will continue to work in good faith with them," European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas told a news conference.
"We have a draft agreement which is on the table. There is a sequence of events that will have to follow and this is where our intentions and resources are now concentrated. I will not speculate on any other outcome," he added.
Media reports said UK Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab, Work and Pensions Secretary Esther McVey, Junior Northern Ireland minister Shailesh Vara, junior Brexit minister Suella Braverman, and parliamentary private secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan have resigned over the Brexit agreement.
Meanwhile, European Parliament President Antonio Tajani said he respects the decision of the British people on Brexit.
"We believe in democracy and respect the decision of the British people. The text agreed to by the European Union and United Kingdom is the first step on a long road. Nevertheless, I am optimistic that it will pave the way towards a close future EU-UK relationship," he told journalists after a meeting with the EU chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier in Brussels today.
The European Parliament will be called upon to approve the agreement and will therefore continue to scrutinise developments, Tajani added. (end) nk.rk
