NEW YORK, Oct 17 (KUNA) -- Kuwait has affirmed its steadfastness in supporting the principle of enabling peoples to self-determination as "one of the most important principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations."  This came in the speech of Kuwait's permanent delegation to the United Nations, delivered by First Secretary Bashar Al-Duwaisan before the Fourth Committee of the General Assembly of the International Organization under the terms of decolonization Tuesday evening.
Al-Duwaisan said that the principle of empowering peoples to self-determination is one of the most important principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations in article 1 of the second paragraph and General Assembly Resolution 1514 of December 1960 on the granting of independence to countries and peoples not enjoying self-determination.
"Although the State of Palestine is not one of the Non-Self-Governing Territories under consideration by the Committee, we emphasize the need to end the Israeli occupation of the entire occupied Palestinian territory and the full realization of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to self-determination."  He stressed that this comes in implementation of the resolutions of international legitimacy and allowing the Palestinian people to establish an independent state on its land with East Jerusalem as its capital and to compel Israel to withdraw from all the Arab territories occupied since 1967.
This is the only solution for a lasting, comprehensive and just peace, as stipulated in the relevant Security Council resolutions, the principle of land for peace, the road map and the Arab peace initiative, he said.
He recalled that the most important achievements of the United Nations since its inception were the independence of many States and their membership in the United Nations.
On the other hand, he said that Kuwait reiterates its support for the "commendable" efforts of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and his Special Envoy Horst Koehler to find a political solution acceptable to all parties concerned with the Sahara issue and supports Security Council resolution 2414.
The resolution stressed the need to make progress towards a "realistic, practical and lasting political solution" to the Sahara issue on the basis of consensus. The resolution also affirmed that the political solution to this protracted conflict will contribute to the stability and security in the Sahel region.
He expressed his satisfaction at the invitation extended by the Secretary-General's envoy to all interested parties to participate in the roundtable meeting to be held in Geneva from 5 to 6 December.(end).
