KUWAIT, Sept 27 (KUNA) -- Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah announced on Thursday that Kuwait would contribute additional USD 42 million to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
The announcement was made during a ministerial meeting held on the sidelines of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly to discuss the financial difficulties facing the UN agency.
Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled reaffirmed Kuwait's commitment to help the UNRWA overcome the current challenges and continue its relief, educational and health programs for the Palestinian refugees.
He stated support to the suggestion of the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres for setting up a steering committee to resolve the financial difficulties of the Agency and find new funding mechanism.
He stressed the need to revitalize the role of the private sector and non-government organizations in alleviating the financial burdens on the donor governments.
The meeting was held under a joint call by the foreign ministers of Germany, Japan, Jordan, Sweden, and Turkey and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini. (end) mmj.gb
