High-level week of 73rd session of UN General Assembly begins Tues.

NEW YORK, Sept 23 (KUNA) -- A high-level week of 73rd session of UN General Assembly will begin Tuesday with a theme of "Making the UN Relevant to All People: Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Peaceful, Equitable and Sustainable Societies." Around 100 world leaders are expected to attend the General Assembly, established in 1945 under the Charter of the UN, which is one of the six principal organs of the UN.
The Assembly is the principal organ of deliberation, policy-making and representation in the UN. Its membership includes all 193 Members of the United Nations, all of which are equally represented according to the rule of one vote for each nation.
At this annual global gathering in September each year, member states will discuss ways of working together on a wide range of international issues covered by the Charter such as development, peace and security, international law.
The current session is expected to focus on a number of important issues, most notably the Palestinian issue, where peace negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis are one of the major issues being discussed by world leaders during their meetings in New York.
As part of the efforts to solve the Palestinian issue, the General Assembly is witnessing a number of meetings dealing with the issue within the framework of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation's (OIC) meetings and the Non-Aligned Movement, which will be held at the ministerial level.
The problem of refugees and the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), which faces an unprecedented funding deficit, will be discussed as well.
The sessions will discuss regional conflicts in the region, such as the Syrian and Yemeni crises and the Libyan war, where the coordination of humanitarian assistance efforts in these countries will be discussed in addition to ending violence and achieving stability through the search for political solutions.
Among the issues to be discussed are ways of combating drugs after an international assessment of trafficking narcotic drugs has been put in place in many countries of the world.
The participation of the UN at that session is also expected to increase in the promotion of justice and the rule of law in international courts, treaties and agreements and support to local authorities. (end) asf.aa
