Today in Kuwait's history

KUWAIT, Sept 16 (KUNA) --

   1990 -- In Baghdad, Iraqi Minister of Local Government Ali Hassan Al-Majeed was declared the alleged governor of Kuwait. US President George Bush addressed the Iraqi people and said that Iraqi troops must withdraw from Kuwait, legitimacy must be returned and all detainees must be released. Bush added that Saddam Hussein had committed a grave mistake by invading Kuwait and that he is not only facing the US, but the whole world.

   1990 -- The UN Security Council unanimously condemned in its resolution number 667 Iraq's transgression of diplomatic missions in Kuwait and its kidnapping of foreign people, and demanded their immediate release, along with other detainees in Kuwait and Iraq.

   1996 -- Kuwait officially agreed to receive US troops in line with a bilateral defense agreement.

   1999 -- Two Kuwaiti border guards were killed on the Kuwaiti side of the border with Iraq in a shooting from the Iraqi side.

   2005 -- Kuwait signed the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism. Foreign Minister Sheikh Dr. Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah at the UN headquarters signed the agreement.

   2006 -- Qadisiya Sports Club won the ninth Asian Clubs Handball Tournament held in Oman after defeating Qatar's Rayan Club.

   2010 -- The State of Kuwait presented one million Euros to the Jacques Chirac Foundation for humanitarian work in Paris. (end)
