Arab FMs urge political deal to end Libya conflict

CAIRO, Sept 12 (KUNA) -- Arab foreign ministers on Wednesday threw their collective weight behind a political solution to the crisis in Libya, based on a UN-brokered agreement to form a national unity government signed by the country's warring factions. It is imperative to respect the sovereignty of Libya and prevent any foreign meddling in its internal affairs, the ministers said during Arab League-hosted talks in the Egyptian capital.
Meanwhile, they welcomed a plan the UN has unveiled with the aim of breaking the political stalemate in Libya, calling for prompt presidential and parliamentary elections in Tripoli.
Arab nations remain steadfast in their support for Libya's Government of National Accord, they said, calling it the "only legitimate government in the country." They also called for an end to the international arms embargo on Libya to ensure that security forces in Tripoli are better equipped to fight terrorism and protect the country's borders. (end) mfm.nam
