Riots in Iraq's Basra go deadly

BAGHDAD, Sept 6 (KUNA) -- At least one person was killed and 35 others wounded in Basra city, south Iraq, on Thursday when protests went violent with rioters torching several buildings.
The casualties include 11 policemen and 24 civilians, local medical and security sources told KUNA.
The rioters attacked local TV stations and premises of political parties and the Popular Mobilization Forces, a state-sponsored umbrella organization composed of some 40 militias.
Earlier today, Maj.-Gen. Saad Mo'en, spokesperson of the Ministry of Interior, cautioned that the ministry received tips that the protesters plan to torch government facilities.
The security services decided to impose curfew in the city this midday but had to back down in the last minutes, he added. (end) ahh.gb
