German court orders city to return terror suspect deported to native country

BERLIN, Aug 15 (KUNA) -- A German court ordered the city of Bochum to return a man, accused of being Osama bin Laden's bodyguard, to the country after he was said to have been illegally deported to his native Tunisia last month.
In a statement, the court ruled that the deportation of the man, identified as Sami A., was "grossly unlawful" and breached "fundamental principles of the rule of law." The 42-year-old suspected terrorist, who denies any wrongdoing, was living in Germany for years and was collecting welfare despite having had an asylum application rejected.
This is due to a law stipulating that people may not be deported to countries where there is a likelihood of torture.
Thus far, Tunisia has refused to return the man, while the city has been ordered to pay a EUR 10,000 fine. (end) anj.sd
