Japan FM, Guterres confirm importance of N. Korea sanctions

TOKYO, Aug 9 (KUNA) -- Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono and visiting UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Thursday shared the view that it is important for UN member states to continue the full implementation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions on North Korea to achieve its denuclearization.
During their meeting in Nagasaki on the sidelines of a ceremony to mark the 1945 US atomic bombing of the southern city, Kono and Guterres also agreed to cooperate in nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Kono welcomed the global disarmament agenda that Guterres unveiled in May, saying it is expected to build up the momentum for advancing disarmament and non-proliferation, according to the ministry. On the reform of the world body, Kono stated that the reform of the Security Council is a matter of urgency, expressing his expectation that the UN chief will take initiatives on this matter.
Japan has been seeking to become a permanent member of the Security Council. (end) mk.hs
