Afghan VP escapes suicide attack which kills 14 in Kabul

ISLAMABAD, July 22 (KUNA) -- At least 14 people were killed and over 60 others wounded in a suicide attack targetting the convoy of Afghanistan's exiled Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum, who returned home to face criminal allegations made against him.
The attacker, who blew himself up near Kabul's airport as the convoy passed by, was stopped in his tracks by security forces long before reaching his intended target, a police spokesman said.
Those killed included security personnel, while Dostum escaped unscathed. Meanwhile, no group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
The senior official had returned to the country after more than a year of self-imposed exile in Turkey over allegations of torture and abuse of a political rival, allegations which he denies.
His return home comes ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled on October 20. (end) sbk.sd
