KUWAIT, July 22 (KUNA) -- At the behest of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Electricity and Water has granted Iraq 17 mobile power generators with a total capacity of 30,000 kilowatts, a senior electricity official said Sunday.
The Kuwaiti move comes in light of the critical circumstances the Iraqi people are undergoing, chiefly a serious shortage of power, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Electricity and Water Mohammad Bushehri said in a press statement Sunday.
It mainly aims at alleviating the electricity shortage in the Iraqi city of Basra, the Kuwaiti official added.
Earlier on Friday, the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity said that the State of Kuwait would provide fuel to out-of-service power stations in Iraq.
His Highness the Amir had told Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi by phone that the State of Kuwait was ready to assist its neighbor to overcome the current turmoil, emphasizing that stability in Baghdad is among Kuwait's chief concerns.
Lack of public services and electricity have resulted in mass protests throughout southern Iraqi cities, with protestors demanding better services and more job opportunities. (end) mt
