CAIRO, July 19 (KUNA) -- The Arab Parliament confirmed on Thursday denounced the "nation-state" law of the Jewish people, passed by the Israeli legislature, Knesset.
Mishaal Al-Salami, the current Speaker of the Parliament, said that the law publicly protects Israel's apartheid crimes against the Palestinians, and deprives them of their fundamental rights enshrined in international law and the principles of human rights, charters, and resolutions of the United Nations (UN).
Al-Salami warned of the tragic results of the "nation-state" law, which establishes hateful racist policies and violates the basic principles of human rights and international law, which is considered a gross violation of equal protection and non-discrimination against national, religious, language and cultural backgrounds, and puts international peace and security in jeopardy.
The Knesset, which enjoys the membership of the International Parliamentary Union, does not have the power to include the enactment of racist laws that destroy the established international order and challenge international legitimacy, he said.
Based on the National Racism Act, the imposition of international sanctions is required by the UN, the Security Council and the Inter-Parliamentary Union on the occupying power (Israel), added Al-Salami.
Al-Salami also called on the UN and all international organizations to take into account and punish these discriminatory acts, based on the 1973 Convention against apartheid and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.
The speaker of the Arab Parliament insisted on better cooperation between regional, national, international Arab parliaments to help support the right of the Palestinian people to obtain the recognition of the Palestinian state and the right to return.
Earlier on Thursday, Israel's parliament approved a controversial piece of legislation that defines the country as the nation-state of the Jewish people. (end)
